Breakouts happen when pores clog with oil, dead skin and bacteria. Heat, sweat, touching your face and heavy products all feed them. The trick isn't to strip your skin dry — that backfires and makes it pump out more oil — but to gently unclog, calm and let it heal.
Salicylic acid (BHA) to clear pores from the inside, niacinamide to settle redness and balance oil, and snail mucin or centella to help spots heal without drying you out.
Don't pick, and don't over-exfoliate — two or three BHA nights a week is plenty. And always moisturise; skipping it makes oily, breakout-prone skin worse, not better.
Dark spots — post-acne marks, sun damage, melasma — are pockets of extra melanin sitting in the skin. They fade slowly, and the single biggest factor is daily sunscreen. Without it, nothing else you do will hold.
Vitamin C to brighten and even tone, niacinamide to fade marks over time, and targeted spot serums with ingredients like tranexamic acid and arbutin.
Think months, not days, and stay consistent. Introduce vitamin C slowly so it doesn't irritate — and wear sunscreen every single morning, rain or shine.
Dry skin is short on oil; dehydrated skin is short on water — and most people have a bit of both, especially with aircon, travel or harsh cleansers. Tightness, flaking and a dull, tired look are the tell-tale signs.
Hyaluronic acid to draw water in, panthenol and ceramides to seal it, and gentle, non-stripping cleansers that leave skin comfortable rather than squeaky.
Layer your hydration onto slightly damp skin, then lock it with a cream — water alone evaporates. Skip hot water and foaming cleansers that leave skin tight.
Redness, stinging and skin that reacts to everything usually points to a stressed barrier — often from over-exfoliating, too many actives at once, or harsh weather. The answer is to simplify and soothe, not add more.
Calming, barrier-repairing ingredients: centella, heartleaf, panthenol, aloe and snail mucin. Keep things fragrance-free where you can.
Pare right back to cleanse, moisturise and SPF for two weeks, then reintroduce actives one at a time. Gentle oil cleansing beats scrubbing.
Oily skin simply makes more sebum, which can stretch pores and lead to shine and congestion. Stripping it dry only tells your skin to make more — so balance, not war, is the goal.
Niacinamide and zinc to regulate oil, BHA to keep pores clear, and low-pH gentle cleansers that clean without over-stripping.
Double cleanse at night — oil first, then gel. Moisturise with something light; even oily skin needs water. Blotting paper beats re-washing your face.
Dull skin is usually dehydration plus a build-up of dead cells scattering light instead of reflecting it. Bring back water and a little brightening and the glow returns surprisingly fast.
Vitamin C and propolis to brighten, watery toners to plump, and gentle exfoliation to smooth the surface.
Glow is mostly hydration. Layer a watery toner, add a brightening serum, and never skip SPF — sun damage is the biggest thing dulling skin over time.
Fine lines come from collagen slowing down, sun exposure and dehydration. Retinol and vitamin C are the two best-studied ingredients for keeping skin firm, smooth and bright as the years go on.
Retinol at night to boost renewal, vitamin C by day to protect and brighten, and rich barrier creams to keep everything plump and comfortable.
Start retinol slowly — pea-sized, two nights a week — and buffer with moisturiser. Daily sunscreen is what protects all your hard work.
Sunscreen is the one product that does the most for your skin — it prevents dark spots, fine lines and dullness before they ever start. In Nairobi's high-altitude sun it matters every day, even when it's cloudy.
A broad-spectrum SPF you'll actually reapply. Sticks are ideal for topping up on the go, even over makeup.
Reapply every couple of hours outdoors. The sunstick makes midday top-ups effortless — and cleanse it all off properly at night.
One simple rule handles almost everything: work from the thinnest textures to the thickest, and always finish with sunscreen in the morning. Build your own from anything on this page.
